Welcome to Salt Lake City puts it's foot down. As a huge generalization most people in
SLC who are not
mormon, highly dislike the
LDS church. And this rally was a gathering of people at all levels of
LDS dislike. From the "I-just-think-they-need-to-stay-out-of-politics" to the "Burn-the-mother-fucker-down" crowd. I'm more in the stay out of politics side with a dash of anger at how entrenched they are in the business of well, business. I can't stand that they own as much as they do and can still be called church. I can't handle that they own both our major news papers,
KSL,
DMBA insurance, the malls downtown and that just some of the things they own in Utah.

http://www.exmormon.org/mormon/mormon410.htm. I feel that all churches are free to preach whatever they would like and if people choose to follow it fine. Even if it sounds crazy to me (like those snake wrangling baptists), this does not mean that others can't choose to follow it. But when a church pushes for their beliefs to become public policy they have gone to far. And this is exactly what the LDS church has done. I read a comment from the church were they say that they feel singled out for their opposition of Prop 8. OF COURSE they're singled out, no other church spent 22 million to get their way of seeing things passed as law.
And yes the proposition did pass, the voters did make their voices heard. In a democracy that is how things work. But when the laws passed deny a group, who has done nothing wrong, rights that everyone else enjoys then the law, regardless of what the voters say, is in my opinion wrong. There will be a long road ahead in testing the constitutionality of this. But from the looks of it there are many out there ready for the long haul. I have no idea what the sign that says "Do mormons follow their own scripture? D&C 34:9" is suppose to tell me.
This is the line the sign refers to: "But before that great day shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood; and the stars shall refuse their shining, and some shall fall, and great destructions await the wicked." I guess they're point is that what the mormons are doing is wicked and will bring on "distructions".
Maybe this guy could help me understand.
